Religious bands have right to play on Mall

In response to the letter to the editor yesterday concerning religious music on campus: It seems as though a common stereotype has been shifted. Most people these days might agree that people who hold tightly to their religious beliefs are extremely closed-minded to other points of view and to outside ideas. However, to me it appears far more obstinate for someone to call cultural music "filth" and "pollution." [Read article]

Football needs more than a new head coach

The campus is embarrassed. Our football team has become a laughing stock. In the last three games, it's been outscored 166-30 in the process of going 0-3.

There seems to be no hope for this season, so it's time to start looking beyond. How can the football team win back the support of its fans, and how can the Wildcats earn at least a semblance of respectability in the college football ranks? [Read article]

photo Build it ... but will they come?

Drainage around Tucson inconveniences drivers in rainy weather and we all complain about rush-hour traffic in a city that could certainly use better planning. But for some species, such as our little hopping friend the toad, the rains and roads mean even more dangerous travel.

Monsoon season is a rough time for Tucson-area toads. All they want to do is feed and breed when the rains come, but Speedway Boulevard runs between where they live and where they mate. That means leapfrogging it across a busy road and ÷ no offense to toads ÷ judging by the number of bodies turned up by National Park Service surveys, they clearly don't have the mental capacity to look both ways. Hundreds of Couch's spadefoot, red-spotted and Colorado River toads die on Speedway each year during the monsoon season. What should be a life-giving season becomes one full of fatalities for these species due ÷ once again ÷ to human development. [Read article]

Chain Gang is the right choice for Club of the Month

Recently there has been much controversy surrounding the selection of Chain Gang Junior Honorary as the UA Club of the Month, bringing into question ASUA for its club funding procedures, the criteria for the selection process for the UA Club of the Month and the selection of Chain Gang Junior Honorary.

For the record, ASUA does not wish for clubs to go through the lengthy process that is club funding, but it is forced to do so. ASUA is a university department and as a result, club funding must follow the same university guidelines that every other department on campus goes through in order to obtain funding. For this reason, ASUA has six professional club advocates to assist clubs in the funding journey. The ASUA Club Resource Center works diligently to ensure that clubs are treated with respect and are granted as much funding as possible. That said, please remember that ASUA funds are only supplemental and limited, as club funding recently has received a budget cut. It is the goal of ASUA to help provide funding and programming to clubs to help with marketing and recognition. [Read article]
