Changes.

That's Arizona football's one-word summary for the midpoint of its 2003 season.

With changes at quarterback, changes at tailback and most recently a change at head coach, it's been tough for the Wildcats to find any consistency or success this year ÷ a trend reflected by a 1-5 overall and 0-2 Pacific 10 Conference record.

With a new head coach in Mike Hankwitz and a supposedly permanent starter in true freshman quarterback Kris Heavner, UA football has shown signs of improvement in its last two games. [Read article]

Commentary: ÎAfternoon Madness' just won't be the same

Oh no, not another idea that makes this athletic department's "anti-student" campaign more and more evident.

Nope, not the athletic department's Rush Limbaugh-stic idea of letting Dick Tomey go a few years ago and then replacing him with his heir apparent, John Mackovic.

Good guess, but it isn't the idea of replacing basketball ticket sales with the money-grubbing Zona Zoo, a scam that most students would agree is more painful on their wallets than a trampling at 5 a.m. [Read article]

photo Volleyball likely to lose out on record crowds

Apparently Lute Olson isn't a big volleyball fan.

The big losers in men's basketball head coach Lute Olson's decision to not hold a Midnight Madness this year appear not to be the fans who are craving a slam-dunk contest or a rusty scrimmage, but actually the volleyball team, which is undefeated (4-0) in matches held before the event.

The Wildcats have twice had record crowds at Pacific 10 Conference volleyball matches held right before Midnight Madness. And of those, they've lost only two games, both last year when Arizona rallied from down 0-2 to beat No. 4 Stanford ÷ the defending national champions ÷ in five games before a record 9,141 fans.
