Affirmative action is necessary force in university considerations, admissions

This is written in response to Chad Mills' opinion about affirmative action law. Chad, lets take a look at what you are saying before you go around spewing this bullshit for us to read. After all, that cannot taste very good.

Mr. Mills thinks that skin color should not be a factor in college admissions; however he only concerns himself with affirmative action. The truth is, if affirmative action were declared unconstitutional tomorrow, there would still be race biases in admissions. The quality of high school one attends is a factor in admissions. Thus people living in richer neighborhoods, whose children have richer schools are more likely to be admitted to a good university. [Read article]

photo Come on, help a poor owl out

It's inevitable that as Tucson grows, housing developers will take over greater stretches of wilderness. As more homes sprout up from the desert, it's not just buyers who pay the price; Arizona wildlife is also footing the bill, but with its very existence.

This week, it is the humble northwest side pygmy owl that has grabbed headlines. It's been on the endangered species list since 1997. At that time, the owl's dwindling population prompted a federal plan to set aside 1.2 million acres northwest of Tucson as the owl's stomping ground. [Read article]

Weapons-free zone keeps campus safer

Just finished the big move into the dorms? Taking UA classes for the first time? Bring your books, cell phone and bike lock. Leave your gun back on the ranch in Texas.

Those little signs with a circle and red line through a gun have an important message to everyone on campus: no weapons allowed. Period.

So what harm could a small pistol in the purse of a so-called "law abiding" citizen (at least by the NRA's definition) on campus do? Plenty, says Rob Wilcox, a spokesman for the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence. [Read article]

Editorial: Tuition lawsuit dangerous

When four UA students filed a complaint earlier this week against the Arizona Board of Regents and the state, alleging that this year's tuition hike violates the state constitution, they cited a controversial clause that must now be interpreted in a way that prevents the universities from being choked of further vital funding.
