Opening the 2003 season on the road, the Arizona rugby team fell to Utah and Montana, but managed to down Idaho in the season's first exhibition matches.
Despite the losses, the games proved to be valuable tools for the Arizona coaching staff, according to UA assistant coach Mike Coleman.
"We did a very good job, being that these were our first games," Coleman said. "We know our players' abilities, but we still need some of our skills tuned."
Arizona's first opponent, Utah ÷ a Sweet 16 team two years ago ÷ managed to squeak by the Wildcats, winning by a try.
On Saturday, the Wildcats bounced back, pounding Idaho with by score of 33-3. In Arizona's second match on Saturday, the Wildcats fell to Montana, 21-7, in the final game of the season-opening road trip.
"We haven't played a lot as a team yet, but we never give up," Coleman said. "Our team doesn't quit, and that's what you need as a rugby team."
The exhibition games were a good test during the beginning of the season and gave the team a chance to face some high-quality competition.
"We know how far we have to improve now for us to make the playoffs," said Coleman.
