Icecats beat ASU in opener

The No. 10 Arizona Icecats started their season off on the right skate last night, holding on to beat No. 18 Arizona State 4-2 at the Tucson Convention Center Arena.

In the end, it was junior goaltender Bryan Aronchick who saved the day for the Icecats, and just about anything else the visiting Sun Devils shot at him.

Aronchick stopped 37 of 39 shots he faced en route to earning the season-opening win in net for Arizona. [Read article]

Water polo cruises to nationals

Southwest Conference champions. That has a nice ring to it, but as members of the Arizona men's water polo team will tell you, it's just the beginning.

The Wildcats took the honor of conference champs this weekend in their own pool by sweeping through their Southwest Conference counterparts with relative ease.

Arizona has had opposing teams afraid to go back into the water this season as the No. 2 Wildcats stormed to a 12-0 conference record and 20-2 mark overall. Saturday and Sunday's sweep at the UA Student Recreation Center pool came at the expense of No. 16 Colorado, Utah and Utah State. [Read article]

Football: Defense intent on stopping Jackson

Oregon State tailback and Heisman Trophy candidate Stephen Jackson looks to duplicate the effort of California running back Adimchinobe Echemandu, when the Beavers (5-3, 2-2 Pac-10 Conference) play host to the struggling Arizona football team Saturday in Corvallis, Ore.

Echemandu ran for 201 yards and three scores on 30 carries against the Wildcats Saturday in Berkeley, Calif.

"We have to be ready to go out there and stop the run," said UA junior defensive end Copeland Bryan. "Last week we had a little bit of trouble against Cal." [Read article]
