Opponent analysis: Huskies' Williams a rare breed

The last time the Wildcats saw junior Washington receiver Reggie Williams, all they could make out as he ran 80 yards for the game-winning score was the No. 1 on the back of his jersey.

Last season at Husky Stadium, Arizona led Washington, 28-26 with just over two minutes to play. The Wildcats were 3-2 on the season at that point, looking for their first Pacific 10 Conference win and a new winning streak.

In steps Williams.

With 2:03 remaining in the contest, the Pac-10's No. 2 all-time leading receiver caught a slant, split the Arizona defenders, and raced 80 yards for the winning touchdown. That was just one of the three scores Williams had in an eight-catch, 184-yard performance against the Wildcats.

From that point, Arizona went 1-4 and finished its fourth straight season without an invite to a bowl game.

The game stood out in the minds of most Arizona fans, but to Williams, it was just a typical day.

Arizona interim head coach Mike Hankwitz stated the obvious.

"He is one of the top receivers in the country," he said.

With his seven-catch, 130-yard performance last week, Williams jumped into second on the Pac-10's all-time receiving yards chart, passing former Wildcat Bobby Wade.

"We have to pay extra attention to Reggie because he makes big plays and he's a big-time receiver," sophomore safety Darrell Brooks said.

Through nine games, Williams has 65 catches for 906 yards with eight touchdowns - just another typical season for the All-American.

School: University of Washington
Nickname: Huskies
Colors: Purple and Gold
Location: Seattle
Homefield: Husky Stadium
Head coach: Keith Gilbertson
Player to watch: WR Reggie Williams
Enrollment: 34,000
Founded: 1861
2002 Record: 5-4 (3-2 Pac-10)

Williams has been at Washington a little over two-and-a-half seasons and is already rewriting the Husky and Pac-10 record books. Last season, he had the best year of any Washington receiver in the program's rich history, and after only his sophomore year was the Huskies' all-time leader in receptions and receiving yards.

Williams was also named a 2002 first-team All-American by the Associated Press for his efforts last season.

This came after an impressive freshman campaign in which Williams was named co-Pac-10 Freshman of the Year with Stanford's Teyo Johnson. He set new Pac-10 freshman marks for catches and receiving yards.

Because of all of his collegiate success, Williams has drawn every kind of defensive coverage imaginable, but Hankwitz said that with the way Washington moves him around, it makes it almost impossible to key in on him.

"They know they have a great receiver, and they are moving him around to try to keep people from overloading coverage one way or the other," Hankwitz said. "You are never going to take him away totally, but you really have to control and not let him get big plays on you."
