In the face of a 49-shot barrage, Arizona treaded on thin ice in its first road contest of the season.
But the Icecats left Towson the same way they came in: undefeated.
A pair of goals by co-captain Mickey Meehan - including the game-winner - and another solid effort from junior goalie Bryan Aronchick powered the Icecats to a 6-5 overtime victory at No. 14 Towson last night.
The Tigers (7-5-1) forced the extra period following a power play goal with 6:15 remaining in the third period. But the Icecats ended the game just 1:40 into OT, as Meehan scored on an assist from fellow junior forward Don Holtz.
The Icecats (4-0-1) gave up four even-strength goals on just eight shots in the first period, falling behind 4-2 early and trailing 4-3 after the first 20 minutes.
"It was just sloppy defensive coverage in the slot," explained UA head coach Leo Golembiewski.
Arizona recovered to score three unanswered goals, capped by second-period tallies by Meehan and junior forward Shaun Brooks to take a 5-4 lead heading into the third.
Though Towson put 49 shots on goal to Arizona's 30, Golembiewski said his team should never have allowed the game to go into overtime.
"We didn't bury the pucks," he said. "If we buried the puck we would have won easily, but we couldn't do it."
After an ugly opening, Aronchick came up big for the Icecats, stopping 44 shots and allowing Arizona to rally for the lead.
The Icecats' road trip continues tonight and tomorrow with back-to-back games against the Navy Midshipmen.
"Navy is always a tough team. They give you hell," Golembiewski said.
The Icecats also took time to visit nearby Washington, D.C. yesterday to meet with Arizona's own U.S. senator, Republican John McCain.
Golembiewski, along with Meehan, co-captain Brooks and associate coach Brian Meehan, posed for pictures with McCain at his office. The Icecats named him honorary captain for the season.
"It was so fun to be with him," Golembiewski said. "He's an Icecats fan and wants to come to one of our games. He'll probably come to one of our games by the end of the semester."
