Sophomores take juniors to task in ASUA councils

A newly formed ASUA council meant to get juniors more involved in student government has done nothing this year, while a similar group made up of sophomores already has three projects in the works.

Although last year's Freshman Class Council saw only limited success in its first year, ASUA decided to establish new councils for the sophomores and juniors anyway.

Now as the end of the semester approaches, the Sophomore Class Council has already started some new projects, yet the Junior Class Council has not held a meeting or elected a president yet.

The JCC has about 10 members.

All of them have come from the SCC that worked under the Alumni Association last year.

Danielle Wiemann, a pre-pharmacy junior who was a member of the group last year, said that the council was involved in events but that there were problems with some of its members.

"The hardest part was that there were only a few dedicated people in SCC its first year," Wiemann said.

Those same people are now in the JCC.

Ryan Harper, a molecular and cellular biology senior who oversees the class councils, said he has struggled all semester to find a meeting time for the 10 members. And a few of the

council members are studying abroad.

"Their schedules aren't matching up with mine or with each other's," Harper said.

Harper said he would keep trying to get everyone together for a meeting so they can finally elect a president and start working on the projects that have been reserved for them.

JCC was originally going to organize a mentoring program and spirit projects.

They were also going to work with the ASUA special events director to try and get basketball games broadcast in Gallagher Theater.

Harper said he has not received responses from any of the members.

"I'm going to keep trying and plugging along. I've sent e-mails out to everyone," he said.

Even though the council hasn't met yet, Harper said he still has hope.

"I don't want to count anything out," he said.

J.P. Benedict, ASUA president, said that the junior class council will begin again next semester when some members return from their study abroad programs.

"When they get back, we'll work on getting them on the same page as the sophomore class council," he said.

That includes recruiting more members.

"We definitely need a bigger group and a lot more juniors to get involved," Benedict said.

Like the other councils, JCC members will still have the freedom to decide what projects they want to work on for the year.

Meanwhile, the sophomore class council, with about 30 members, is already working on three projects.

Their projects include establishing a housing guide that rates off-campus housing, helping to organize Zona Zoo activities, and working on educating Phoenix high school students about campus life and college in general.

"We have been working with the sophomore (class) so they can graduate to the next council next year," Benedict said.

Harper said he attributes the success of the SCC to the fact that many of its members served on FCC last year.

"The Sophomore Class Council is excited to be involved. That mentality followed from (FCC)," he said.

Benedict said that the sophomores' previous experience in ASUA also has made it easier for them.

The junior class is different because they weren't brought up by ASUA like the freshman and sophomore classes.

They don't do things in the same manner as the other councils in ASUA, Benedict said.
