3 Res Halls lose Internet over weekend

Students living in three campus residence halls experienced problems with their Internet yesterday, complaining that their service had been either sporadic or totally unavailable over the holiday weekend.

Residents of Gila, La Paz and Yuma Residence Halls began to report problems with their Internet as early as Thursday, saying they were not always able to log on to the Web.

In addition, some residents were able to access the Web while a roommate was not able to. In some cases, students could also log on to only a select number of Web sites.

Students who called ResComp over the weekend to report problems were unable to reach staff members.

Instead, residents heard a recording that stated that problems should have been fixed by Friday evening and that ResComp officials would be unable to address consequent Internet issues until today.

ResComp was closed Monday in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

Daniel Tuttle, Residence Hall Association president, said that while ResComp assured RHA that the problem would be fixed by Friday, students still had a lot of trouble.

"It was really weird because on some people's computers, if they used Netscape, they would be able to access the www.arizona.edu site but not others," Tuttle said. "We were all very confused."

Students needing to print class syllabi or find homework posted on the Web went to the library or the Integrated Learning Center to do the work.
