Cardinal stay unbeaten in thriller, send Cats home winless on swing

STANFORD, Calif. - Twice this weekend, the Wildcats tried to come back after falling down big, early.

But twice, their comeback efforts came up short.

And twice the Arizona players had to witness the home-court fans rush the court after the final buzzer, celebrating the fall of one of college basketball's most dominant programs. [Read article]

Arizona State assist puts Arizona ahead of Stanford in Pac-10

One week after a frustrating loss at Arizona State, the Wildcat women's hoops team became Sun Devil fans.

"I think this was the first time in history that an Arizona program was cheering for ASU," junior guard Dee-Dee Wheeler said.

After the Devils clobbered Stanford in Tempe, the Wildcats (18-5, 10-2 Pacific 10 Conference) routed California 77-59 in McKale Center to take sole possession of first place in the Pac-10 for the first time this season. [Read article]

Analysis: Cats can't escape own stardom in Bay Area sweep

STANFORD, Calif. - Being in the spotlight may be nothing new for the Arizona men's basketball team, but being in the company of celebrities may not be something the No. 12 team in the country is ready for.

The fanfare surrounding Arizona's trip to Northern California didn't bode too well for the Wildcats this weekend, as they dropped a pair of games to unranked California Thursday night, 87-83, and No. 2 Stanford Saturday afternoon, 80-77. [Read article]

Walk-off solo homer kicks off 2004 season in style for Wildcats

The Wildcat baseball team used a six-run third inning and held off a late surge by UC Riverside to beat the Highlanders 10-7 yesterday at Sancet Stadium.

Arizona's (3-0, 0-0) win capped a three-game sweep over Riverside this weekend to open the 2004 season.

"It's only going to get better," said sophomore outfielder Derek Decater of the Wildcats' start. "It's a long season. We'll take these three (wins), but it's not the best first three we could have had." [Read article]

photo Softball breezes through tourney

In its opening weekend, almost everything went as expected for the Arizona softball team. Sophomore pitcher Alicia Hollowell dominated, and the Wildcats won all five games, including three by the mercy rule.

An impressive power outburst was the only surprise.

The No. 2 Wildcats (5-0) ruled New Mexico (2-3) for the second time in three days yesterday in the championship of the Arizona Softball Pepsi Classic, 11-0 in five innings. [Read article]
