The ASUA Senate approved $2,538.78 in special funding for five UA organizations last night.

The Engineering Student Council received the amount they requested, $897.18, for I-Expo. The event provides the chance for students interested in becoming engineers to meet with recruiters.

Omicron Delta Kappa received $572.48 to attend the ODK National Convention in Norfolk, Va., Feb. 27 to 29. Due to the cost of the ticket, the Appropriations Board decided to fund only one member's attendance.

The Hillel Foundation requested $675.60 but only received $382.80 for advertising and Facilities Management for an event featuring Lev Raphael, a renowned gay and Jewish author who will be on campus on March 3.

The board decided to fund half of the advertising amount, giving the foundation funding for only a quarter-page ad in the Arizona Daily Wildcat, rather than a half-page ad as it requested.

Zeta Phi Beta sorority requested $685.12 but only received $405.12 for its Pacific Undergraduate Retreat on Feb. 21 to Universal City, Calif.

The board only funded hotel and registration charges, not the travel costs.

Associated Students of the University of Arizona Sen. Nick Bajema asked if there is a policy on determining the amount an organization receives for advertising.

Casey King, Appropriations Board director, said there are no guidelines on how much the board will fund organizations to advertise their events.

He said sometimes they would lower the size of the ad in proportion to the size of the event.

ASUA senators approved the appointment of Nathan Schwandt, undeclared freshman, for this summer's Bear Down Camp director.

"I was present for his interview, and he is perfectly qualified," said Sen. Matthew Harris.

Schwandt said that because of Bear Down Camp, he got involved in ASUA and Freshman Class Council, which have been positive experiences for him.

Bear Down Camp is a summer camp that serves as an introduction to the UA for incoming freshmen.
