Injury rehab moving faster than planned

Two games into the Arizona men's basketball team's season, the Wildcats lost twice in the same night.

Before the final whistle could blow on Arizona's loss to then-No. 8 Florida, Arizona lost a leader.

It's been almost three months since Isaiah Fox's season came to an end because of a torn meniscus in his left knee. Now, the forward is taking steps toward returning to the court and stepping into the future. [Read article]

Stoudamire torches Trojans, Bruins

The Pacific 10 Conference named UA shooting guard Salim Stoudamire its Player of the Week after the junior posted back-to-back impressive outings during Arizona's blowout wins over Southern California and UCLA. Stoudamire scored 22 points against the Trojans Thursday before hitting for a career-high 34 against the Bruins on 12-of-17 shooting from the floor and 7-of-9 from the 3-point arc. The Wildcat sharpshooter sat down with the Wildcat to provide some insight on what makes No. 20 tick. [Read article]

Icecats miss first tourney in history

Yesterday, it became official: The Arizona Icecats' 25th anniversary was one to remember, for the wrong reason.

The Icecats (11-12-2) ended up ranked No. 14 in the last regular season poll, missing the American Collegiate Hockey Association national tournament for the first time ever.

Arizona finished one rankings spot away from the tourney, just behind rival Arizona State, a team Icecats head coach Leo Golembiewski said the UA should have swept in the Valley of the Sun a few weeks ago. [Read article]

Women's Hoops Notes:

McKale perfect elixir for Wildcats' road struggles

The Wildcat women's hoops team hasn't lost a home game since Nov. 22, 2002. The UA has won 25 straight in McKale Center, including 21 by double digits.

Sounds like just what the Wildcats need after a pair of frustrating losses in Los Angeles ÷ including a two-point loss Sunday at Southern California ÷ that knocked them out of first place in the conference. [Read article]

Former college star turns assistant coach

From Michigan to Portugal to Washington to Tucson, and from cop to professional basketball player to assistant coach, first-year UA women's assistant coach Yeshimbra "Shimmy" Gray has been there and done that.

That's precisely why head coach Joan Bonvicini wanted Gray on her women's basketball staff.

"I wanted to bring the absolute best person," Bonvicini said. "Having been a former player and a police officer, she had a lot of different leadership qualities that were beneficial to our program. I thought she would be able to relate to a lot of different people." [Read article]

Softball: Finch loses espn.com hottest athlete contest

The first bad news of the Arizona softball season is expected to come down this week: Former Wildcat Jennie Finch will not retain her crown as ESPN Page 2's hottest female athlete.

While espn.com has not officially announced it, the Wildcat projects that she will lose to soccer player Heather Mitts. Finch trails 30.2 percent to 26.4 percent with about 245,000 tabulated votes. The other finalists are former tennis player Anna Kournikova with 18.9 percent, figure skater Jamie Sale with 16 percent and snowboarder Gretchen Bleiler with 8.2. [Read article]
