photo Men's Hoops: Year in Review

It may not have had a dream ending, but the 2004-2005 season was an enjoyable ride for the Arizona men's basketball team.

For the second time in three years, the ride ended in the Elite Eight in heartbreaking fashion.

Unlike last season, the team played up to its potential and sustained chemistry throughout the year.

"I couldn't even tell you about the chemistry last year," senior center Channing Frye said. "There wasn't any." [Read article]

Commentary: Replay the right call for Pac-10

In the professional world, it's called "attention to detail."

In the world of amateur college football, it's considered the difference between wins and losses, between angry fans and athletic departments swimming in well-earned cash.

The Pacific 10 Conference announced March 11 that instant replay will be used in its college football games on a trial basis in the fall.

The Pac-10 is the second major football conference to announce this in as many months, following the ACC's decision made Feb. 25. [Read article]

photo Football Notes: Austin stands out as Kovalcheck continues recovery

With its starting quarterback remaining cautious but optimistic on the sidelines, the Arizona football team has found a potential gem buried in its depth chart.

Junior Adam Austin, a former walk-on, has taken all the snaps for Arizona in the first two spring practices.

"I've got a lot more attention (this year), that's for sure," Austin said after his second day behind center.

"It feels good. I've waited my whole life for an opportunity like this," he said. [Read article]

The Arizona women's club ice hockey team has struggled with coaching, player and financial issues since its inaugural season, but nothing prepared the team for the news that one of its own was struggling with cancer.

Junior defenseman Lauri Corso, 20, was diagnosed with ovarian cancer two years ago.

"It's a disease that is hard to diagnose because most of the symptoms, just like being bloated or cramping, you just associate that with your period," Lauri said. "I had this cyst that ended up being a cancerous tumor for four years before anyone decided to test it because it doesn't cause problems." [Read article]

Synchronized swimming finishes ninth in St. Louis

As people waited to see how close their favorite basketball team would get to St. Louis or even Indianapolis, others watched as the Splashcats did some heavy damage in the pool.

The Splashcats competed against 27 other teams last week, placing ninth at the U.S. Collegiate Synchronized Swimming National Championship in Gainesville, Fla.

Arizona head coach Jill Ranucci said she would have loved for her team to place higher, but is pleased with where the team placed overall, considering the stiff competition. [Read article]
