photo Men's Hoops: 'Hot Sauce' ponders options

Olson now predicts Adams will stay

Just more than a week after head coach Lute Olson predicted that junior guard Hassan Adams would leave school early for the NBA, Olson said he thinks Adams will be back for his senior season.

After talking to NBA scouts in the past week, Olson relayed that not one scout considered Adams ready for the NBA.

"As of this point, I don't think Hassan will go," Olson said. "Where I felt at the end of the year that it would probably be a done deal, I don't think it is." [Read article]

Baseball: Snakebit-Sidewinders thump Cats

Wildcats can't hang with pro squad in charity game

After battering around college pitching staffs all season, No. 6 Arizona had no such luck against the Tucson Sidewinders.

The Sidewinders, the Triple-A affiliate of the Arizona Diamondbacks, shut out the Wildcats 8-0 last night in an exhibition game at Tucson Electric Park.

All proceeds from the event were donated to buy books for preschoolers and help fund the College of Education's study on local childcare needs. [Read article]

Arizona men's basketball coach Lute Olson left almost no subject untouched in his season-ending press conference.

He talked about everything from the NCAA Tournament to the television contract for the Pacific 10 Conference, from current players to recruits. Olson said a little bit of everything, wrapping up his 22nd season as head coach in Tucson.

Aside from being four good minutes away from a trip to the Final Four in St. Louis last weekend, Olson said this season's team exceeded his expectations. The Wildcats went 30-7, just the third time in school history the men's basketball team has won 30 games. He admitted that going into the season, he had some question marks about this team, but they impressed him in the end. [Read article]

photo No. 2 softball renews rivalry with ASU

A storied rivalry shows off a facelift tonight in Tempe.

At 7, the No. 2 Arizona softball team plays the first of four games this week against No. 20 ASU.

The Wildcats (28-3, 2-1 Pacific 10 Conference) play No. 12 Oregon State (24-7, 3-0) Friday and Oregon Saturday and Sunday at Hillenbrand Stadium.

Arizona claims a slim advantage (86-72) in the all-time series with ASU (25-9, 1-2) but fields and faces a team with few links to those of years past. [Read article]

Guyette third pitcher to win in last month

For the fourth consecutive week, an Arizona player earned conference weekly honors.

This time junior Kevin Guyette won Pacific 10 Conference Pitcher of the Week, commissioner Tom Hansen announced yesterday.

Guyette pitched a one-hitter as No. 6 Arizona (21-10, 5-1 Pac-10) shut out UCLA 11-0 Saturday evening on its way to a three-game series sweep of the Bruins on the road. The right-hander struck out 11 batters and walked two while throwing 100 pitches. [Read article]

Softball Notes

Alicia Hollowell lost more than a decision in the No. 2 Arizona softball team's 6-3 loss Sunday to No. 3 California.

The junior pitcher missed out on her 101st career victory, which would have tied her for fifth place with Susie Parra (1991-1994) on Arizona's all-time victories list.

As it is, Hollowell (19-2), who carries a .72 ERA in 146 1/3 innings with a Pacific 10 Conference-high 271 strikeouts, can move into a tie for third place with three victories this week against No. 20 ASU, No. 12 Oregon State and Oregon. [Read article]

photo Athlete Of The Week: 'Unsung hero' Perry grinds out wins

On a team that emphasizes "heart over talent," senior Kelly Perry is the heart and soul of the Arizona women's tennis team. Perry played as the third senior on a team with two senior stars in Dianne Hollands and Maja Mlakar.

The 5-foot-5-inch Perry pushed herself to overcome taller opponents and has gritted and ground her way to another successful season, her third as a Wildcat and final as a collegiate tennis player. [Read article]
