Things you always never wanted to know

  • Based on the victim-to-population ratio, an adult has a greater chance of being physically assaulted in the state of Arizona than anywhere else in the country. The state with the second-highest rate of assault is North Carolina, and third is New Mexico.

  • It takes one day to get a divorce in the Dominican Republic.

  • Cinderella's slipper, many scholars believe, was not made of glass. The word "verre," or "glass," they claim, was incorrectly substituted in early versions of the story for the word "vaire." In medieval French, "Vaire" means "fur."

  • When sailors speak of sheets (as in "four sheets to the wind") they are not talking about sails. A "sheet" in nautical terminology is a rope or chain.

  • Bees have five eyes. There are three small eyes on the top of a bee's head and two larger ones in front.

  • It is impossible to sneeze and keep one's eyes open at the same time.

  • While reading a page of print, the eyes do not move continuously across the page. They move in a series of jumps, called "fixations," from one clump of words to the next.

  • A galaxy of typical size - about 100 billion suns - produces less energy than a single quasar.

  • One ounce of LSD is enough to make doses for 300,000 people.

  • In 1740, a cow was found guilty of sorcery in France and suffered the same fate as all sorcerers of the time - public hanging.

  • The principality of Monaco consists of only 370 acres.

  • The average mouth produces one quart of saliva per day.

  • Glaciers occupy 5.8 million square miles, or 10 percent, of the world's land surface - an area as large as that of South America.

  • The Earth travels through space at 660,000 miles per hour.

  • President Ulysses S. Grant was arrested during his term of office. He was convicted of exceeding the Washington speed limit on his horse and was fined $20. President Franklin Pierce was arrested while in office for running over an old woman with his horse, but the case was dropped for insufficient evidence in 1853.
