A student is given a Discman and a CD then asked to opine on each song

Mike Constantiner's bio:

  • finance and entrepreneurship senior

  • Favorite band:
    Atreyu

  • Least favorite band:
Ashlee Simpson ("I hate her with a passion.")

    1. Green Day, "American Idiot"

I've heard this before. I like it because it's like the old punk I used to listen to, but I don't like the message... they'd probably play it in the "Rock Against Bush" concert thing... it's definitely anti-Bush.

    2. Dizzee Rascal, "Stand Up Tall"

(Five seconds into the song) So far, this song sucks... it's like techno mixed with reggae and hip-hop.

Girlfriend: Do you know who it is?

Constantiner: Beenie Man. Black-Eyed Peas. Something like that... it's like they almost got it right, like for a club song, you know? But it's too annoying to be something you can listen to over and over again... it sounds like German rap, stuff I heard when I was in Germany. Like, white guys rapping in German. This guy is obviously black or African American, but it's not even in English. It definitely has a European sound to it.

    3. The Polyphonic Spree, "Hold Me Now"

It's almost like Peter, Paul, Mary. Like Paul Simon, but really like flower power child, like hippie stuff. And I can't tell if this is serious or a joke, this song. Actually, it sounds like Blind Melon too. The singer's voice... this song is getting really annoying right now. It's almost like something from a Broadway musical, like "Tommy." Something like that, that's rock-inspired, but you can picture a million people marching on stage doing a stupid little dance... it sounds like a rock-influenced musical.

    4. Terror Squad, "Lean Back"

This is, like, new hip-hop. It sounds like every other hip-hop song to me, or rap song. It's like ugh, ugh, ugh, ugh... "-from the Bronx-". Of course... The guy's voice sounds really familiar. I'm trying to figure out who it is... I'm not the biggest fan of rap. This is Fat Joe. "Lean back". Or his brother is Fat Joe. The one that died.

    Girlfriend: Fat Joe. Terror Squad.

Constantiner: Terror Squad. Yeah. This is one of those songs that's not bad in the background. It reminds of being in a club in New York. It's not something I'd listen to on my computer or just sitting around, but it's not bad if you're partying, to have it in the background.

    5. The Killers, "Somebody Told Me"

(First five seconds) It sounds kind of spacey... This is something like Franz Ferdinand or something kind of like that. New Wave, like rock that goes back to '80s rock. Not like The Strokes or anything like that, but like The Darkness, something like that. It's good. I like it. It's actually really good. Like David Bowie-type rock... this might even be something from the '80s. It might not even be new... I'd definitely recommend this to anyone. Are they coming to Tucson or something?
