Most women get top sorority pick

New sorority members say they are looking forward to a semester of making new friends, philanthropy events and sorority activities.

After receiving her bid on Tuesday night from Kappa Alpha Theta, Kristin Seifert ran to the house and was warmly greeted by the active sisters, where they enjoyed carnival-type activities, dinner and introductions, said Seifert, a communication sophomore.

So far, Seifert said, she and her pledge class have been "induced into the sorority," and have gotten to know each other by introducing themselves and sharing stories from recruitment.

Seifert said she is looking forward to getting to know the women in her chapter, attending sorority functions and having activities like dinner exchanges with other fraternities.

One aspect of joining a sorority Seifert fears is getting too wrapped up in being involved in her sorority and not having enough time for other commitments.

"I'm in two other honoraries and I have to get a job," Seifert said. "I know it's a big commitment, but I hope it doesn't get too chaotic."

There were 580 bids offered in Tuesday's Bid Day ceremony, and of those, only 20 declined, said Panhellenic Association President Erin Cohen.

Cohen said most of the women were pleased with their bids, and when everyone found out where their bids were from, the excitement was high.

"Many women received bids from their top choices and the energy was amazing," Cohen said. "You couldn't have asked for anything more."

The women who got bids from their top choices happily accepted and joined other women in celebrating their invitations.

"When I opened my bid I was ecstatic," said Malina Sharoni. "One of the girls in front of me got the same house, too. It was really exciting."

Sharoni, a retail and consumer sciences sophomore, said she received a bid from her top choice, Gamma Phi Beta.

Some women, however, weren't so happy with how their recruitment week turned out.

Elin Sigurdson, an undeclared sophomore, said she dropped out of rush when she was asked back to houses she did not like as much as others.

"On the second day there were a lot of houses that I really liked," Sigurdson said. "But I didn't get asked back to the houses I liked, and I did get asked back to the houses I didn't like as much."

Sigurdson said she liked most of the women in all of the houses, but she felt she made more of a connection with women whose chapters did not ask her back.

"I was confused why I didn't get asked back to the ones I liked, but I know it's hard to make a judgment on someone in 15 minutes," Sigurdson said. "I know with me it takes a while to get to know my personality, that's why I wish we could have had more time to get to know each other. I wish we could have gone out to dinner and hung out for a while."

While Sigurdson chose not to attend preference night, she has no animosity toward the women who did not invite her to return.

"I don't have any hard feelings," Sigurdson said. "I just didn't have a connection with the girls at the houses. I will still hang out with them anyway."
