Blaze causes $20K in damage

A fire broke out yesterday afternoon in two students' apartment, causing $20,000 worth of damage, according to the Tucson Fire Department.

The fire is believed to have started by a candle left burning in the two UA students' upstairs apartment at Palm Shadows Apartment complex, 1815 E. Speedway Blvd.

Tucson Fire Department Capt. Paul McDonough said the fire started around 2:30 p.m. and was under control within seven minutes of TFD's arrival. [Read article]

Cats defeat Missouri, lose to Pepperdine after first-half lead

The No. 18 UA soccer team struck first against Pepperdine yesterday but couldn't hold down their lead, falling 3-1 in Malibu, Calif.

"We certainly did a good job for the first 20 minutes, but for whatever reason we just didn't play well after that first 20 minutes," said Arizona head coach Dan Tobias.

Freshman forward London King scored her first goal in a Wildcat uniform in the seventh minute. King put in a rebound off a Jennifer Klein shot that clanged off the post. [Read article]

Would you feel safe if you had a whistle?

The administration's decision to make safety sessions offered at orientation voluntary brings into question the sincerity of the UA's claim that student safety is a top priority.

After failing to renew a program grant, these informative sessions, which can be seen as an extension of student safety, were for the first time made voluntary. As a result, attendance dropped by 85 percent.

Further consequences of this decision are potentially dangerous, and will likely put the well-being of the student body at risk. Even while the meetings were mandatory, false impressions floated around campus. Just look at the notorious "rape whistles" students know so little about. [Read article]

It's coming to a theater near you

"The Aristocrats" is probably the most star-studded film in Hollywood history. But surprisingly, what's drawing critics and audiences alike to this homemade film is its reputation for being one of those indescribable films that you have to see for yourself to understand.

This may be because it is a film of another color, one that doesn't quite fall into any category of cinema. It centers around one joke, the oldest and coincidentally the dirtiest joke in history, told and performed by some of the best-known comedians in the world. [Read article]
