photo New attitude, factors propel Arizona in Purdue rematch

The last time the Arizona football team played Purdue, the Wildcats had a different head coach, three different quarterbacks, and if you asked players who were there, a different attitude and approach.

The Boilermakers handled the 2003 team with ease, winning 59-7 in West Lafayette, Ind.

Although just one season separates that blowout and tomorrow's non-televised, 7 p.m. matchup, no one from either school expects the same outcome. [Read article]

Hoops recruit visits campus

Thomas to watch Wildcats practice

There's no one the Arizona men's basketball team would rather sign to complete the 2006 recruiting class than small forward Lance Thomas, and so far the feeling seems to be mutual.

The 6-foot-8, 200-pound Thomas arrived in Tucson last night along with his uncle, Monte Montgomery, who has been at his side during the entire recruiting process.

"He's very excited about possibly being able to play for (Arizona) and being able to be coached by (head coach) Lute Olson," Montgomery said. "He's said nothing but positive things and he's very optimistic about it." [Read article]

photo Home tournament has soccer kicking up its game

Heading into this weekend's Four Points University Plaza Arizona Soccer Classic at home, members of the No. 22 Arizona soccer team feel like they are right where they want to be.

"I think what's good is that we haven't really peaked and hit our full potential, and that's perfect," said senior midfielder Jennifer Klein. "It's kind of like we have some hidden tricks. It's nice. We don't have everything out on the table." [Read article]

photo Rubio looking to make UA history

The No. 20 Arizona volleyball team had a chance last weekend to give head coach Dave Rubio a place in the history books as the winningest coach in program history.

But judging by how nonchalant Rubio was before the Bronco Invitational in Santa Clara, Calif. - where Arizona took two out of three matches - he likely wasn't too upset that the milestone would have to wait a week.

"Right now (you) try to win every game you can," he said before the tournament. "(The record) just shows that I've had a lot of good players play for me and a pretty good coaching staff." [Read article]

Opponent Analysis: Purdue's Ingraham return to UA for game

Normally, the choice between the 2002-2003 Arizona football team led by the reviled John Mackovic and the Purdue program of the same era would be a no-brainer.

But then again, Kyle Ingraham is not your normal player.

Tomorrow, the No. 12 Boilermakers invade Arizona Stadium led offensively by Ingraham, a junior wide receiver who as a highly touted recruit narrowed his college choices to Arizona and Purdue. [Read article]

photo 'Savvy' QB leads charge

The Arizona football team has vacated Jimenez Practice Field for another day, with a matchup against nationally ranked Purdue just three days away.

But one man remains, throwing pass after pass beneath the facility's artificial lighting.

This is the kind of dedication the Wildcats will need all season from redshirt sophomore quarterback Richard Kovalcheck, who, according to teammates and coaches, is essential in the team's quest for a bowl bid. [Read article]

Men's golf opens season in familiar territory

The No. 16 Arizona men's golf team takes a cut at its first tournament of the season today and tomorrow at the William H. Tucker Invitational in Albuquerque, N.M.

Arizona assistant coach John Knauer said that the Wildcats, who last won the tournament in 1992, are hoping to keep in line with past squads that placed consistently in the top three.

"The guys know this golf course well and have played in this tournament before," he said. "They have some home-course knowledge." [Read article]
