photo Football notes: Stats deceptive in Wildcats' loss to No. 1 USC

Special teams carried Arizona against Trojans

Much has been said about the school-record 724 yards the Arizona football team gave up against No.1 Southern California Saturday, not to mention the Wildcats being out-gained by nearly 500 total yards.

Arizona head coach Mike Stoops said what most people don't look at in terms of offensive production are special teams yards, which are often impossible to see by merely looking at a box score. [Read article]

photo A solution to McKale overcrowding: Hoops practice facility taking shape

A new on-campus basketball practice facility is closer to becoming a reality, said Arizona athletic director Jim Livengood in a press conference yesterday in McKale Center.

The facility, which is still pending approval by the Arizona Board of Regents this winter, will be built north of the Hillenbrand Aquatic Center and the Mary Roby Gymnastics practice facility along North Campbell Avenue.

About $6 million to $9 million will be set aside for the gymnasium, Livengood said. The project will be privately funded, and construction will not begin until all the money is raised. [Read article]

From the booth: The wait is over

Basketball season is upon us, folks. No more will we have to respond with the most commonly used comeback in the history of discussions surrounding Arizona Athletics:

When the clock strikes 9 p.m. Friday, the 2005-06 Arizona basketball campaign will officially kick off, ushered in by the cheers of thousands of fans during McKale Madness. [Read article]

An Arizona graduate decked out in Phoenix Suns purple-and-orange-striped shoes, casual blue jeans and a plain gray shirt strolls along the sidelines of McKale Center watching the Suns prepare for another grueling NBA season.

He remembers going to classes, working and having a good time at Dully's and Dirtbag's at night, en route to earning his bachelor's degree in business administration in 1982. [Read article]

Women's golf in top 4 after first day

The No. 23 Arizona women's golf team sat in fourth place after the first day of the Edean Ihlanfeldt Invitational in Seattle, eight shots behind leader Pepperdine.

The Wildcats shot a 14-over-par 302 yesterday at the Sahalee Country Club, one of the toughest courses Arizona will play all season.

"It wasn't bad considering our best player was our throw-out score," said Wildcats head coach Greg Allen. [Read article]
