Senior Kirkland shoots 68 as Cats tie for seventh
The Arizona women's golf team saved their best effort for last, shooting a season-best 5-over 289 yesterday to tie for seventh place at the Stanford-Pepsi Women's Intercollegiate in Palo Alto, Calif.
Senior Cassandra Kirkland led the Wildcats with a 3-under 68 in the final round to finish in a tie for 16th individually.
"It is really good to see Cass playing the way we all know she is capable of playing," said Arizona head coach Greg Allen in a press release.
Freshmen Lauren Espinosa and Amanda Wilson and redshirt senior Lani Elston-Marshall all finished in the top 50 for the Cats, with Espinosa heading the group in a tie for 41st.
Freshman Sommer Scholl, who followed a first-round 89 with an even-par 71 on Sunday, was forced to withdraw from the tournament after only four holes yesterday because of tendonitis in her wrist and elbow.
Duke dominated the event, leading from start to finish and defeating second-place UCLA by 27 shots overall.
The Wildcats head to Las Vegas on Monday for the Las Vegas Collegiate Showdown, their final tournament of the fall season.
"I am excited for our team right now," Allen said. "I am very pleased with our finish (yesterday), and I think we can carry over the momentum."
