Student hit on bike in stable condition

A UA student who was hit by a van while riding his bicycle near campus Saturday was upgraded from critical to satisfactory condition.

Brandon R. Foltz, a business administration senior, was hit at 6:56 p.m. Dec. 7 and was transported to University Medical Center with life-threatening injuries after a van traveling west on East Grant Road ran a red light and hit Foltz, who was riding north on North Mountain Avenue, reports stated.

Foltz's condition was upgraded yesterday.

"He got up and walked for the first time today," Foltz's mother Carin Treasure said in an interview Wednesday. "But he's far from 100 percent."

Gregory N. Cervantez, the driver of the 1991 Toyota Previa, remained at the scene and was given a citation for failure to stop at a red light, but with an increased penalty due to Foltz's serious injuries.

An investigator at the scene concluded Cervantez had no signs of alcohol impairment.

Although Foltz was wearing protective equipment and had a safety-light attached to the bicycle, Tucson Police Department Sgt. Mark Robinson said that is not always enough.

"You have to remain alert and be aware of potential hazards," Robinson said. "Slow down to check cross-traffic, to make sure everyone else is obeying the law."
