The fifth-ranked doubles partnership of Colin O'Grady and Roger Matalonga ran through the ranks at the All American West Regional this weekend before falling to the nation's third-ranked team from UCLA in the championship round. The two received the Wildcat's accolades with an impressive run through the tournament that included a tough 8-6 win in the semifinals. The Wildcat sat down with the two upperclassmen to find out the strengths of their games, who parties harder, and if they can hit the under-the-leg shot consistently.
Wildcat: What do you feel is the most important thing between two doubles partners?
Matalonga: You need a combination of different things. If both guys play the same game, then I don't think it's going to work. I think we're different in the types of game that we have. Colin has more imagination when he plays and a better serve, and I'm more solid and run more and have more energy.
O'Grady: Ouch. (laughter)
Wildcat: You said your game is different. Do you feel one of you hits it harder or the other player has a better backhand or forehand?
O'Grady: This guy hits it much harder than I do (Matalonga laughs). He hits it harder but he also makes it. I can hit hard, but it usually doesn't go in.
Wildcat: What is the most different thing about Roger being from Spain?
O'Grady: He always eats pasta (both laugh). The guy is your typical Spanish tennis player. If you could pick one Spanish person, it would be him.
Wildcat: He's like the typical California guy that has the spiky bleach-blonde hair and Converse shoes.
O'Grady: Yeah, yeah, Spain has a certain way of playing and it's him. Everything they do in Spain, he does here (both laugh).
Wildcat: Is the pasta worse here than it is in Spain?
Matalonga: The pasta is the same, the tomato sauce isn't as good.
Wildcat: What's your favorite place to get pasta here?
Matalonga: Macaroni Grill is pretty good.
O'Grady: But he makes it himself every day.
Wildcat: Would you rather lose in the Wimbledon finals or win a non-Grand Slam event?
O'Grady: Lose in Wimbledon finals, for sure.
Matalonga: Maybe I'd rather do that too.
Wildcat: Who is your favorite athlete?
Matalonga: When I was a kid I always liked Michael Jordan.
O'Grady: Anna Kournikova? (laughs) The way she strikes the ball and the way she moves so gracefully.
Wildcat: Can you hit the under-the-leg shot consistently?
Matalonga: I have never learned the shot. (It's) the shot you always see on TV and dream to make it in a match, but I do it the wrong way (he stands up and hikes up one leg).
O'Grady: You're not supposed to lift up your leg. I've made it once before in pretty much the biggest match I've ever played. It was against the No. 15 guy in the country and it was at Pac-10s and a huge crowd around me and the ball goes back behind me and I was like, "third set, let's just go for it," and I hit a winner.
Wildcat: Who can party harder, the junior from Spain or the senior from Tempe?
Matalonga: (laugh) We have our days, sometimes he parties harder me and then sometimes he just isn't into it.
O'Grady: It always depends on this guy. This guy can come out and have a terrific night, but other times he says he's just going to sit around.
Wildcat: Your most consistent serve – swing it outside or hit it down the line?
Matalonga: Down the line.
O'Grady: I think I'm more a down the line guy.
Wildcat: Has Andy Roddick increased the sex appeal of tennis players?
O'Grady: Andy Roddick isn't liked by many guys. (laughter) I think he comes off as cocky and people see him as incredibly cocky so a lot of people have no problem bashing him.
Wildcat: Would you let Mandy Moore take you out?
O'Grady: Any day of the week.
Wildcat: Where would you go?
O'Grady: Her place?
(laughter)
Wildcat: With his Spanish accent, how many girls does he get?
O'Grady: (laughter) Not as many as he could, but he definitely has girls coming up to him. He's very picky.
Wildcat: What is the difference in Spanish girls and American girls?
O'Grady: This could ruin any chance with any other girl ever.
Matalonga: The Spanish girls have more personality. Maybe that's just me, but it seems here when I go out, the girls always ask me the same questions. I like American girls too though.
Wildcat: OK, this or that: The fastest serve or the quickest forehand?
O'Grady: Fastest serve.
Matalonga: The quickest forehand.
Wildcat: Paris Hilton or Lindsay Lohan?
O'Grady: (laughter) I'm in love with Lindsay Lohan.
Matalonga: Who is Lindsay Lohan?
Wildcat: She's the one in "Mean Girls."
O'Grady: Don't try to play that off like you haven't seen that (laughter).
Matalonga: I guess her.
