ROTC prepares for Ranger Challenge

photo

On a cool, quiet Veterans day, members of the ROTC military science Ranger Challenge class did not take the day off. They continued to train for a grueling two-day, eight-event competition challenging their physical and mental abilities.

The team began the day with a 10k (6.2 miles) rucksack march, in which each cadet carried a load of about 50 pounds (30 pounds for female team members). Peter Kim, a political science senior, played music from an MP3 player attached to his rucksack for motivation. [Read article]

Early lead, early defense carry UA to home victory

The No.11 UA men's basketball team built a big, early lead on the heels of its defense and cruised to a 80-69 victory over San Diego in the first round of the preseason National Invitational Tournament last night in McKale Center.

The UA defense shut out the Toreros for 6:49 of the first half and allowed just two points over an 8:50 span of its season opener. Arizona went on a 16-0 spurt over that span to take a 30-10 lead with 4:58 left in the half. San Diego fought back, but never seriously threatened the Arizona lead. [Read article]

Emily Dickinson wrote, "Water, is taught by thirst." In the desert, everyone can relate to those words.

To memorialize those who've lost their lives while crossing the U.S.-Mexico border, members of a Poetry Center class have created an installation that fuses poetry, art and spirituality.

"SpeakWater: Regando La Frontera" is the first installation from a class or workshop to be displayed at the Poetry Center, said Gail Browne, director of the Poetry Center.  [ Read article]
