UMC buys new cancer radiation technology

When David Horner found out he had testicular cancer last year, he braced himself for the worst.

"I thought, 'I'm going to die - am I ready to die?'" Horner said. "Everything came to a standstill."

But after two surgeries, a month of chemotherapy and a state-of-the-art radiosurgery treatment, Horner, a 25-year-old doctoral student of pharmacology, is on the road to recovery.

Horner was the fourth patient in Tucson to receive treatment from a new shaped-beam radiosurgery system purchased by University Medical Center last month. [Read article]

The No. 21 Arizona volleyball team (18-10, 10-8 Pacific 10 Conference) has overcome plenty of adversity this season, but the squad will remain unsatisfied until it can bring home an NCAA tournament championship. For the ninth consecutive year, the Wildcats will have the opportunity to do so as they travel to San Diego to take on UC Irvine tomorrow at 6:30 p.m. in first-round action. [Read article]

'Tis the season for awkward family reunions

With Thanksgiving over and done with, we have now officially started the holiday season. Most of us during this time will be gorging on a variety of sugary sweets, spending what could be a down payment for a car on gifts, and maybe, just maybe, celebrating the birth of Christ.

Yet, besides gluttony and commercialism, another aspect of the holiday lies in family time. Excuse me while I try to suppress my excitement.

Last week, though, I found myself at one of those family gatherings that I have come to evade like the Arizona football team dodges wins. [Read article]
