Election code changes approved by ASUA to avoid past problems

Senators approved minor changes in the ASUA Election Code bylaws to avoid past problems and confusion during elections at last night's Senate meeting.

Turmoil occurred last spring during the Associated Students of the University of Arizona elections when the deadlines where extended because of a lack of applicants.

Bylaws were changed at last night's meeting to give the ASUA Election Commissioner Adam Falck the official authority to extend deadlines for certain positions if ASUA again receives a lack of interest.

Alistair Chapman, ASUA president, said the changes are to ensure smoother elections this year.

Falck and Chapman said they increased the amount candidates can spend on election materials because of inflation growth from the last time the dollar amount was set.

Sanctions for posting fliers and banners endorsing a candidate were stiffened slightly.

If a candidate posts fliers in an unauthorized location, they will now have 24 hours to remove them without penalty.

Hanging banners are strictly prohibited during ASUA elections, and the bylaws were changed to disqualify the candidate from the election if that happens.

Senate approves funding for clubs, UA LateNight, registration info session

Senators approved funding requests for a late night at the Student Union Memorial Center, fliers advertising an information session for students with class registration concerns, and initial and special funding for a few clubs.

Two hundred dollars was allocated to help fund the previous UA LateNight in the student union.

The UA LateNight will be held Dec. 8, the last day of classes, and the money will go toward advertisements and a DJ.

The UA LateNight will have live music, a movie showing, a poker tournament with prizes, a root beer keg and karaoke.

ASUA puts of UA LateNight is to provide an alternative late-night and weekend activity for students, said Nathan Bell, an ASUA senator.

Fifty dollars was allocated to advertise for a new committee to address registration concerns and discuss problems students have faced.

Alpha Kappa Psi, a business fraternity, was allocated $100.71 for initial funds.

Kesher Reform Jewish Students, a religious club, was allocated $450 in special funds for a room and equipment rental.

The Associated Student Enthusiasts of Wei Qi was allocated $166.45 in special funding to purchase a game and book from the UofA Bookstore.
