All good things must come to an end.

No team knows that better than the Arizona women's basketball team (11-4, 3-2 Pac-10), who had the nation's longest home winning streak, 34 games, snapped by No. 8 Stanford on Sunday, 78-66, in front of a national television audience and 3,035 fans at McKale Center.

Arizona's last home loss came on Nov. 22, 2002, in the Wildcats' 2002-2003 season opener in overtime against Louisiana State, 78-71.

The Cardinal, who shared the Pacific 10 Conference championship title with Arizona last season, shot 89 percent from the free-throw line on their way to the win. With the victory, Stanford improved to 13-2 overall and 5-1 in the Pac-10.

"It was a great run, a lot better than even we're getting credit in Tucson," said UA head coach Joan Bonvicini. "It was incredible to win that many games at home and it hurts, it hurts bad.

"We need to go back and get another streak going," she said. "We worked really hard for this. We worked very, very hard. I think Stanford is a good team. They're healthy. They have a great young player (Candace Wiggins), one of the best in the country."

Wiggins notched a game-high 28 points and was named the U.S. Bank Pac-10 women's basketball player of the week for Jan. 6-10.

The Cardinal shot 49 percent from the field and held Arizona to only 37 percent shooting. Both teams brought down 33 boards, while the Wildcats had 10 turnovers compared to 12 by Stanford.

"We are just really down that we lost our home winning streak. It's something that we took pride in and that's gone," said senior guard Katrina Lindner. "But we have to keep our heads up. It's been awesome - we just have a lot of confidence when we play here, and obviously you would when you have a home win streak like that. We were really upset but we just have to keep our heads high and move on."

"Give Stanford all the credit tonight, they played a very good game," said junior guard Natalie Jones, who had a game-high six assists in addition to seven rebounds. "(In) the second half, our position defense, I think, that was a big thing for us. Our help wasn't coming on time and then when our help did come, we were fouling."

Senior point guard Dee-Dee Wheeler led the Wildcats with 25 points and six rebounds. Junior center Shawntinice Polk added 12 points and seven boards despite still recovering from a left knee injury she sustained in the Wildcat's 67-63 win at Washington Dec. 27.

"Polkey's OK, she's tired," Bonvicini said of the center, who contributed 32 minutes against Stanford. "I think she's a little out of shape. She's not a 100 percent. I thought she played a very good first half. I probably played her a little bit more (than I would have liked). I knew I was going to need her today."

Polk did not play in the 69-47 loss at in-state rival ASU on Jan. 3 and saw limited minutes in Friday's 80-69 home win over California.

In addition, freshman guard and 3-point threat Jessica Arnold injured her left shoulder in the Washington game and is listed as day-to-day.

The Wildcats began their winter break with a 70-62 loss at Georgia on Dec. 12 but followed it up with four consecutive victories, including wins over UC Santa Barbara on Dec. 16, 96-80, and Chicago State on Dec. 19, 70-50. Arizona began Pac-10 play by narrowly defeating Washington 67-63, and Washington State 54-51, on the road on Dec. 27 and 29, respectively.

Wheeler was named the U.S. Bank Pac-10 women's basketball player of the week for Dec. 13-19 for the second time in her career, the 33rd selection for Arizona.

Arizona hits the road to take on Southern California Friday at 8 p.m.
