Women defeat Oregon State, men trounce British Columbia

After a winter break from the pool, the Arizona swimming and diving teams both notched victories in their first meets of 2005. The women's team beat Oregon State 143-118, and the men defeated the University of British Colombia 149-108 at Hillenbrand Aquatic Center Jan. 7.

The women finished first in nine events including the 400-yard medley relay team of sophomores Emily Strouse and Whitney Myers, and juniors Jenna Gresdal and Ryann Hackett. The team won with a time of 3:49.68.

Myers also took first in the 400y individual medley and third in the 100y freestyle.

Gresdal posted another first for the team with a win in the 200y freestyle and 50y freestyle.

Hayes won the 100y backstroke with a time of 49.60 and junior Erin Sieper won the 100y and 20y breaststroke.

Senior Emily Mason was another first place finisher with a win in the 200y butterfly.

The most impressive performance from the women came in the 100y freestyle where three Wildcats finished on top, with freshman Lacey Nymeyer winning the event followed by freshman Courtney Cashion and Strouse.

The men had an equally impressive meet. The 400y relay medley team, composed of senior Nate Stevens, junior Simon Burnett and freshmen Nick Thoman and Albert Subirats won with a time of 3:21.35.

Fresh off an impressive 2004, Burnett finished first in three events - the 100y backstroke, 50y freestyle and the 500y freestyle.

The men took the first three spots in the 100y freestyle. Junior Lyndon Ferns took first with a time of 45.12, followed by sophomore Adam Ritter (46.91) and junior Tyler DeBerry taking third (47.55). DeBerry also finished second in the 400y individual medley with a time of 4:05.73.

Subirats also took first in the 100y butterfly with a time of 50.06.

Both teams face Washington and Northwestern Jan. 14 and 15 at the Hillenbrand Aquatic Center in their next meets.
