Hoops coach, family plan to make pledge to Arizona Cancer Center

Lute Olson, head coach of the UA men's basketball team announced yesterday the Olson family plans to make a $1 million contribution to the Arizona Cancer Center. The donation is a gift from the family and will benefit the Bobbi Olson Endowment for Ovarian Cancer Research.

Olson said the donation "will set the stage" for a community that leads the world in women's cancer research, and "help things really happen." [Read article]

Stoudamire makes 'a little difference'

As the unranked Washington Huskies knocked off then-No. 17 Arizona in McKale Center last season, senior guard Salim Stoudamire was forced to sit and watch after being benched for disciplinary reasons.

UA head coach Lute Olson jokingly said his senior shooting guard would probably "make a little difference."

Stoudamire has been on a hot shooting streak the last few weeks, stroking the ball at a 60 percent clip from beyond the arc in conference play while earning Pacific 10 Conference Player of the Week Honor last week. [Read article]

What is art? "Art is the most passionate orgy within man's grasp," said Jean Dubuffet. Artist Edgar Degas concurred: "Art isn't something you marry. It's something you rape." Regardless of how one conceptualizes art, one word that rarely defines it is profitability. Indeed, the UA's arts programs are once again making headlines because of funding woes.

The Arizona Daily Wildcat reported last week that UApresents, is dangerously underfunded. Lack of theater ticket sales has left UApresents scrambling for money and barely staying afloat with a recent $50,000 anonymous private donation. The crisis is common. UA arts programs - including dance, music, performing arts and visual arts - chronically suffer from money shortages. But for all the programs bring, it's time for UA administrators to commit to a level of funding that will permanently sustain such programs. [Read article]

We at the arts desk receive a lot of mail. Most of it consists of brochures for the Chef Tony Knife set (one of the butcher knives can chop a tennis shoe in half!) or irate letters from Wildcat readers addressed to the "farts desk" informing us we should be stabbed in the face for picking on "You Got Served."

Recently, however, we've been delighted to receive a string of letters from Wildcat readers who all seem to have the same question on their minds: What's the arts desk secret for staying in shape? Read article]
