Getting in the mood with movies

"Drunk" - "Punch Drunk Love" shows us the colors of love. It's funny and heartbreaking, but ultimately satisfying. And while it is a PT Anderson film, at least there aren't any frogs

A word to the wise: do not get trapped watching some soul-sucking, ass-numbing romantic comedy made for middle-aged spinsters and preteen girls.

This Valentine's Day, take a stand against cheesiness and watch a film that you can actually enjoy. Below is a list of recent films that are brilliant, and will definitely do the trick in making the evening amorous.

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind - "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind" is one of the most amazing films in recent history. Writer Charlie Kaufman and Director Michel Gondry weave together memories of a lost love with new hope for a blooming one.

"Eternal Sunshine" is a love story that is devoid of clichés and shows the complexities of the mind and emotions. It is perhaps the most true-to-life tale of love ever portrayed on film (besides the whole memory erasure thing). With this movie, you get the bitter and the sweet. But, ultimately, the sweet prevails. Coupled with Jon Brion's moving soundtrack, this movie will appeal to the romantic inside anyone.

Punch Drunk Love- Director PT Anderson tells us to turn the contrast and color all the way up on our televisions and play the movie at a loud volume! "Punch Drunk Love" is a throwback to old romantic movies. It captures what it feels like to be vulnerable, misunderstood, tricked, schemed and deeply in love. If you follow Anderson's movie watching directions, "Punch Drunk Love" goes beyond convention through the colors, sounds and music.

Brion, once again brings us a soundtrack that will turn anyone into a puddle on the floor. This movie is offbeat, and worth experiencing. If played correctly, it is a moving experience that will get even the iciest of hearts in the mood for love (or sweet, sweet lovin').

Lost in Translation- Sophia Coppola, esteemed winner of both an Oscar and Razzie, demystifies traditional thoughts about love portrayed in film in "Lost in Translation." There is no sex, very little kissing and a deep emotional connection. Coppola is a hesitant cupid in this tale, which leaves room for some fantastic dialogue and outstanding performances.

This is not the run of the mill romantic movie - it's far too smart. Bill Murray and Scarlett Johansson's relationship is so devastatingly platonic that by the end of the movie, the need for relief from the sexual tension between them is so strong, the likeliness of your special someone wanting to break it himself or herself is 2:1. Guaranteed.

Buffalo '66- This movie is totally rad, hilarious and profound. Vincent Gallo directs and stars in it- and no there is no blowjob scene. The premise is that Gallo kidnaps Christina Ricci so she can pose as his wife, because he does not want his parents to know that he was in jail. It's pure genius. And while it does not sound romantic, it really is.

Be sure to check it out for Valentine's Day. Not only will your special someone love it, but also s/he will think you're a total badass. And everyone knows that a badass is the thing to be on Valentine's Day.

Y Tu Mamá También- Sexy, sexy, sexy. Foreign films are always a good choice for getting in the mood for romance. Many imported films are very open about sexuality and love and the intersection between the two.

"Y Tu Mamá También" is a stunning example of this openness. Plus, it stars two major hunks, Gael Garcia Bernal and Diego Luna. The storytelling in the movie is phenomenal. The performances are fantastic. And, was it mentioned that it is chock full of sexy sex? It's a winner for sure.

Unfaithful- People who are alone on Valentine's Day or who are planning a devastating break up for the big day should watch "Unfaithful."

There is not much to say other than that love makes people do crazy things, like bashing someone else's skull in with a snow globe.

Happy Valentine's Day!
