Mark Kotsay's two-run bloop single in the bottom of the ninth capped the Titans' three-run rally as top-ranked Cal State-Fullerton defeated the Arizona baseball team 9-8 yesterday afternoon to complete a series sweep over the Wildcats.
It was the third game-winning RBI for Kotsay as Fullerton came back from an 8-2 deficit to score seven unanswered runs.
The Titans (9-1) beat Arizona 6-2 Friday and won 9-5 Saturday in what was the UA's first road series of the season.
Despite the losses, the Wildcats (11-5) have shown dramatic improvement over last year's performance against the Titans. The Titans beat Arizona by an average of eight runs last year, compared to this year's four.
The first two games were characterized by the outstanding pitching of the Titans. In Saturday's game, the No. 22 Wildcats had 13 hits, but they were guilty of 14 strikeouts . The offense was led by resurgent third baseman Jake Thrower and centerfielder Di ego Rico, who both had three hits.
The Wildcats looked to five pitchers in an attempt to hold off the Titans. The pitcher-by-committee approach failed for the Wildcats, who had a combined eight earned runs and 15 walks.
The final score in Friday's game was 6-2, but the game was never close. The Titans scored two runs in the first inning, and the Wildcats couldn't rally.
Fullerton was led by the Kotsay's bat. Kotsay, an All-America centerfielder, was Collegiate Baseball's Co-National Player of the Year last season. Pitcher Kirk Irvine threw a complete game.
