After 42 years of employment at the UA, Bill Levengood retired last week as the supervisor of the Sanitation Department within Dining Services.

He said he enjoyed working with students and has fond memories of how the UA has changed over the years.

"Bill was a behind-the-scenes, hard-working and dedicated employee," said Kathleen Noble, food production manager in Dining Services. "He came to the Student Union three years after it opened, and over the years he has seen its many changes."

Levengood, who was hired in 1953 as a busboy, said, "I remember serving food from Louie's Lower Level when it had dirt floors."

He added, "The students would also perform plays down at Louie's."

Throughout his career in Dining Services, Levengood spent one year in food preparation, supervised the east and west dining areas, supervised Louie's Lower Level and spent the last four years as the supervisor of the Sanitation Department.

Levengood said his travels and promotions within the department did not always go according to plan.

"I had been training to be a supervisor all week, and it was my first night on my own, and I forgot the combination to the safe," he said.

"I tried to call my boss, but his number was unlisted. I explained to the operator that I was sitting on a large sum of money and I really needed to get a hold of him. Eventually, I talked the operator into calling my boss and wouldn't you know it, when he said the first number to the combination, I remembered the rest."
