Women's tennis in Tempe

Sometimes the best way to get in the water is to just jump in.

That is what freshman tennis player Martine Vandekerckhove will learn this season as she plays her first collegiate tournament in the United States. The Belgium-born Wildcat will get her first taste of competition this morning.

Competing in the Arizona State/Miss Karen's Frozen Yogurt Fall Tennis Classic in Tempe, the Wildcats start play at 8 a.m. and will continue through Sunday afternoon. Also competing are returning seniors Stephanie Sammaritano and Khristen Pietrucha, and so phomore Monique Allgre. Arizona's best player, Vicky Maes will not make the trip for undisclosed reasons.

Men's tennis

The men's tennis team is off to Austin, Texas, to participate in the pre-qualifying tournament for the All-American Intercollegiate Tennis Championships tomorrow and Sunday. Players compete for a chance to play in the All-American Tournament. With the sla tes wiped clean, 28 returning All-Americans will compete this weekend to defend their titles.

The Wildcat lineup includes seniors Henrik Wagner and Jack Enfield, junior Tom Haugland and freshmen Jean-Noel LaCoste and Jerome Oliveri.

Men's club lacrosse

After relentlessly pounding on each other in practice for three weeks, the Laxcats now have the opportunity beat up on someone other than themselves.

The Laxcats will start their exhibition season at 1 p.m. Sunday at Bear Down Field against the Arizona Lacrosse Club, a team comprising players from the Tucson and Phoenix Lacrosse clubs. The field is located at the southwest corner of Fourth Street and C herry Avenue, north of Arizona Stadium. Admission will be free to the general public.

Women's club rugby

The Arizona women's rugby team will put its perfect record on the line this weekend at the Camelback Tournament in Phoenix.

The team is off to a 3-0 start after two victories over Arizona State and a win over Northern Arizona.

Graduate student Meghan O'Donnell has been the most impressive performer thus far for the Wildcats. She is the team's leading scorer, having scored six times in the wins over the Wildcats' state rivals.
