Rugby team to host third tournament

The Arizona rugby team is back to business this weekend as it hosts the third annual Memorial Invitational Tournament at Estevan Park.

UA, who is 11-4 on the season and finished the conference season at 5-2, is coming off a solid 32-14 win over Buckinghamshire College of England and has won seven of its last eight matches.

Joining Arizona in the four-team, single-elimination invitational will be New Mexico, San Diego and Colorado.

Arizona defeated San Diego Feb. 15 in California by a score of 23-21.

UA won the tournament the previous two years. The team beat San Diego 33-27 in 1996 and repeated last season with a 49-10 victory over Washington.

The first kickoff will be at 10 a.m. Saturday when Colorado faces San Diego. UA will play its opening game against New Mexico at approximately 11:15 a.m. The championship game is at 12:30 p.m. Sunday.

The tournament represents the last home weekend of the season for the Wildcats, who remain hopeful and optimistic for an invitation to postseason play.
