Sidelines

Just two of many good reasons why every self-respecting Arizona sports fan should head to the Robson Tennis Center on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.: 1) Arizona State will be in town and 2) UA seniors Vicky Maes and Betsy Miringoff will be playing in their last home games as Wildcats.

Maes is planning a two-step attack. Saturday morning, she will whip up some eggs at her house for the whole team and then, in the afternoon, she will turn her attention toward beating the Sun Devils.

"We're going to have breakfast at the my house before the game, and then I'm looking forward to showing the home crowd how much I like playing for Arizona," Maes said.

Briefly

Saturday, the UA club cycling team captured top honors in both the men's and women's events at the Williams-Bellemont-Williams road race.

The competition was the second of three qualifiers for the National Collegiate Cycling Championships, which will be held next month.

Arizona senior Mark Wald-Hopkins claimed first place for the men after breaking away on the 60-mile course. Senior Justin Peschka was close behind in third place while Brian Antol, Jesse Pleger and Scott Ellis finished sixth, seventh and ninth respectively. Wildcats Chris Moody and Brent Skeen rounded out the No. 10 and No. 11 spots.

On the women's side, senior Christine Mares continued her winning ways on the 40-mile course, held on old Route 66. She was followed across the line by teammates Allison Duncan, Nancy Ellis and Cheryl Lacotta, allowing Arizona to make a clean sweep of the event.

ASU did not send any riders to the event and Northern Arizona lost its sole racer to an injury in a pre-race accident.

The Wildcats return home to Tucson for their final qualifying race when they take on the Colossal Cave course on May 3.

By the Numbers

2:

Number of years since UA's men's and women's tennis teams have both swept Arizona State in the same year. Earlier this season, the women's tennis team beat the Sun Devils 4-3 in Tempe on February 28. The men won by the same score the day before. They will try for a sweep over the weekend.
