Junior Michel Stopa returns a ball during the doubles matches against Washington Saturday. Stopa had the only win for the Wildcats, who will play California in Berkeley Friday.

Despite the rainy weather and the distraction of nearby Spring Fling, the UA men's tennis team (7-9 overall, 2-7 Pacific 10 Conference) came away with a 4-3 win over the Oregon Ducks Friday at the Robson Tennis Center.

The match was delayed for two hours because of the rain, but play did finally begin at 3:30 p.m.

Singles matches were played first in an attempt to save time. UA ended up splitting the wins.

On court No. 1, UA senior Adnan Novo defeated Oregon's Thomas Schneiter 0-6, 6-4, 6-4.

"I don't know what happened with the first match," Novo said. "I came back out on the court and focused myself and concentrated on a win."

Arizona's Jean-Noel LaCoste defeated Guillermo Carter 6-4, 6-4 on court No. 2.

"This win was very important to me because it was my first Pac-10 win of the season," LaCoste said. "This was also a very big win for the team, it has strengthened our wins."

On court No. 3 Pascal Salasca defeated Oregon's Bertrand Devillers 6-4, 6-3.

Oregon won the remaining three singles matches.

In doubles Arizona defeated Oregon on court No. 1 and 2.

LaCoste and Salasca defeated Carter and Devillers 8-4. Michel Stopa and Alex Brown defeated Schneiter and David Becker 8-2.

The Wildcats came away with only one win Saturday against Washington.

Stopa defeated Marcus Lunde 6-2, 5-7, 6-1 on court No. 4.

The rest of the matches went to the Huskies.

"We just didn't play as a team today," UA assistant coach Bob Helmig said.

Washington's Robert Kendrick defeated Salasca on court No. 2 as Salasca was unable to finish the match because of an apparent groin injury. There was no word on Salasca's condition, but he is expected back next weekend.

The Arizona women traveled to the Northwest over the weekend and came away with two wins.

Arizona (6-10, 2-7) took on the Washington State Cougars Thursday and pulled away with a 6-3 win, UA's first of the season in the Pac-10.

Lindsay Blau was defeated by WSU's Erica Perkins 6-3, 3-6, 6-2 on court No. 1 and UA's Monique Allegre was defeated by Patrycja Gajdzik 6-0, 6-3 on court No. 2.

Despite the two top seeds losing, UA came away with four singles wins from their lower seeds. Michelle Gough won on court No. 3 over Tamara Gilipovic 6-2, 6-3, Joanna Buczkowska defeated Melissa Pine 7-6, 6-4, Vanessa Abel defeated Andrea Reisz 6-7, 3-6, 7-6 and on court No. 6 Carly Stringer defeated Moniek Van de Ven 6-2, 6-4.

In doubles Allegre and Blau won 8-5 on court No. 1. Abel and Gough won on court No. 2 8-5.

UA defeated Oregon 8-1 in Pullman, Wash., Saturday.

Allegre, Gough, Busczkowska, Abel, and Stringer all came away with wins in the singles matches. All three doubles teams came away with wins as well.

UA's results from the Washington match yesterday afternoon were not available at press time.
