Laxcats look to get rest and experience
The UA Laxcats' only game this weekend will be an exhibition match against the Tucson Lacrosse Club on Saturday, giving key team members a chance to recover from both injuries and illness before heading back into conference play next weekend.
Defensive leader Jeff Cady was frustrated for both games last weekend with a nagging hamstring injury. Head coach Mickey-Miles Felton said Cady tried to practice this week, but the injury has kept him off of the field. Defenseman Tom Christian is recovering from offseason knee surgery, and Felton is hoping to get him some playing time in Saturday's game.
"I would like to get Tom some game experience before we head to California," Felton said.
Midfielders Matt Wilkens, Lon Packer and Chris Thomas have all been battling the flu for the past two weeks. Wilkens has not been able to practice this week, but should be able to play in the game.
"Matt has got a lot of heart," Felton said. "He proved that last weekend by playing with a temperature in the 100s."
Wilkens scored two goals in the Laxcats' loss to Ft. Lewis College last Saturday, but sat out for Sunday's victory over the Colorado School of Mines.
Felton said while the goal is to get rested for the upcoming conference season, the team also needs the game experience.
Saturday's game is at 1:00 p.m. at Wildcat Field located on 15th St. between Tucson and Plumer. - Chris Reimer
