Safe places for battered woman
To the editor,
After reading the commentary by Nancy Knox in today's paper (Feb. 11), we are left with a feeling of concern regarding the message that victims of abuse may be receiving. As advocates our main focus is to provide victims with all possible options; unfortunately, this article leaves one with the impression that there are little to no options in abusive situations.
In reality, we are fortunate that our community has exceptionally good resources. One agency, the Brewster Center, has adopted a "no-turn-away" policy, and victims of abuse are ensured a safe bed at either one of their shelters or in a local hotel. In addition to the two Brewster Center shelters and transitional housing program, there are two other shelters operated by the Tucson Centers for Women and Children.
Advocates are available through a number of local and campus agencies to help victims of abuse. UA's Oasis Center for Sexual Assault and Relationship Violence (626-2051), open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday provides advocacy, crisis intervention, counseling and support for UA students, staff and faculty dealing with these issues.
