Vitamin C

Arizona Daily Wildcat,
September 8, 1999

(Elektra)

Colleen Fitzpatrick, formerly of a crummy little post-grunge band called Eve's Plum, has decided to branch and do her own little Spice-Girls-wannabe (get it?) solo project, which she calls "Vitamin C."

The buzz is that this album is light 'n fluffy pop's last, best hope. The buzz is sadly mistaken. Vitamin C doesn't only fail to take the genre in a new direction, she actually fails to take it in any direction. Her eponymous debut flounders in clichs and songs composed of half an idea each - and those are the good songs.

Vitamin C's first highly marketed single (not to be the last) is the paltry, no-brainer "Smile." "Life - it ain't easy," sings Fitzpatrick, "Put a smile on your face, make the world a better place." A cameo appearance by the lovable dinosaur Barney wouldn't be a shock.

It seems as though Fitzpatrick and Elektra decided to take advantage of the teenage pop group wasteland that has become the staple of modern American musical taste.

In doing so, Vitamin C has joined the ranks of pop groups like the Backstreet Boys, NSYNC and 98 degrees, not only alienating her Eve's Plum fans, but in doing so, she has also joined a sinking ship. The backlash will not be docile.
