Film school for dummies

By Maggie Burnett

Late night procrastination doesn't get any better than this.

The D. FILM: Digital Film Festival Web site (www.dfilm.com, then follow the links to the festival site) was especially designed for all those aspiring film directors out there. This site lets the web surfer create a short, animated "movie" using pre-fabricated characters and scenarios.

Take for instance this skit: A rendezvous between a Motown survivor a.k.a. "Funk-master" and a disco chick wannabe a.k.a. "Ravegirl."

Funkmaster and Ravegirl meet in the sunny desert (or any other desired location). Then you can stick in some catchy lines, choose the background music, add a title and voilĘ - becoming a hit director is that simple.

This might all sound a bit tricky on paper, but at the site, it's pretty self-explanatory. The site does require the Shockwave program in order to view the final animation, but it's fairly easy to install on your home computer.

The best part of the site is the e-mail option it provides at the end of the movie making. The fruits of this creative endeavor can be emailed to all those adoring fans.

Not only does this site suck up hours of precious study time, but it's also faster and cheaper than real film school.
