USC is Arizona's opportunity to regain credibility

By Bryan Rosenbaum
Arizona Daily Wildcat, October 8, 1999

The UA football team has not had a season to remember so far, to say the least, but a win tomorrow against USC can turn the entire season around.

It's a big game to begin with, and now with the fact that the game is being picked up regionally by ABC, it is the perfect opportunity for the Wildcats to resurrect their season. If Dick Tomey can't get his troops fired up for this one, then their are some serious problems.

No matter how fired up the team is to beat the Trojans, it'll take a monster performance by the defense to stop R. Jay Soward. Kelvin Hunter has been the target of a lot of criticism this year, especially in these pages, and it's time for him and the secondary to step up and play a solid game.

Like the Oregon game a year ago, when the Wildcats answered doubts with a 38-3 romp over the Ducks, Arizona needs a victory against USC. Penn State, according to Tomey, wasn't the most important game - the Pac-10 games are.

Well, the conference is wide open, and this game is as big as they come.

Peter Warrick is the idiot of college football.

What top draft pick and probable Heisman winner goes into a department store and does what he and teammate Laveranues Coles did? We all like deals, but $21.40 for clothing worth $412.38?

Florida State head coach Bobby Bowden initially suspended Coles, but not Warrick. Then later kicked Coles off the team and suspended Warrick indefinitely. Warrick and Coles committed the same offense- and have done so previously as well from the sound of things- they should be treated the same way.

Bowden got respect for sitting Warrick for the Miami game on Saturday, but expect the Heisman favorite to be back before the season ends.

Michigan travels to Michigan State this weekend, and despite thoroughly beating Wisconsin and Purdue the last two weeks, the Wolverines still haven't gotten the recognition they deserve.

Sure, they're No. 3 in the polls, but nobody is giving the maize-and-blue a chance in the hostile environment of Spartan Stadium up in East Lansing. Spartans head coach Nick Saban did the wise thing by taping players' mouths shut, but expect them to do a lot of whining on the field on Saturday after the Michigan defense stuffs yet another opponent. Just ask Ron Dayne and Drew Brees.
