McGregor finishes fourth for women
The Arizona men’s cross country team won the third annual Dave Murray Invitational on Saturday, as 10 Wildcats placed in the top 18 positions.
Junior Robert Cheseret won with a time of 25:01. He passed teammate Obed Mutanya (25:03) at the finish line to take the victory.
Mutanya has finished first and second, respectively, in his first two meets this season.
“It’s very good and positive, but sometimes as a coach I have to see that they don’t kill each other in practice,” said Arizona head coach James Li of Cheseret’s and Mutanya’s performances.
Junior Moses Mpanga finished fourth with a time of 25:18, with sophomore Mohamed Trafeh and juniors Kenny Frank and Eric Chavez finishing fifth through seventh, respectively.
Consistency was a theme for both the men’s and women’s teams, as the Arizona women had eight of the top 14 finishers at the Invitational.
Emily McGregor came in fourth with a time of 25:52. The seventh through 12th place spots were all held by Wildcats, as each athlete crossed the finish line within 15 seconds of one another.
“We have a very close team in terms of finishes,” Li said. “We’ll have to see if we can move the whole pack forward.”
Arizona State’s Brooke Bennett (22:23) won the women’s race, followed by teammate Whitney Hardt.
The Arizona cross country teams are next in action Sept. 30 in South Bend, Ind., for the Notre Dame Invitational.
