Last year at this time, the UA gymnastics team was down in Louisiana in the heart of Mardi Gras. The fact that there was no Cajun cuisine at McKale Center Friday night didn't stop the Wildcats from continuing their celebration as they defeated No. 9 Brigham Young (195.1) and Oregon State (194.1) in front of a crowd of around 900.

Not only was the victory a big one, but Arizona's score of 196.125 broke the school's previous high of 195.05.

"The girls had a look in their eye tonight that said that they were not going to fall," UA head coach Jim Gault said. "They went out there and took the meet."

The sixth-ranked Wildcats had no weakness as they did not record an event score under 48.9. The scores in the beam (48.9) and floor exercise (49.3) were both new Arizona records, while their efforts on the vault (48.925) and bars (49.0) both rank third in the UA record book.

While the performance was every bit a team victory, the performance of freshman Maureen Kealey was icing on the cake. Kealey finished first in the all-around with a career-high mark of 39.150. Also, her scores on the beam (9.775) and floor (9.925) were both career highs, the latter ranking second in Arizona history € all this after hyperextending her knee on her first vault.
