Spears sweeps, Arizona takes 2nd

On the final day of the Pacific 10 Conference Diving Championships, Arizona's Brian Spears scored a 470.75 in the men's platform final to finish first, and helped the Wildcats to a second-place finish overall (603 points).

The UA women finished in fourth place.

The Stanford Cardinal claimed the Pac-10 crown with 908 points at the meet held at Arizona's Hillenbrand Aquatic Center.

Not only did Spears claim the title, but he was honored as the 1996 Pac-10 Men's Diver of the Year. Head diving coach Cynthia Potter was also recognized for her accomplishments, being named the 1996 Men's Diving Coach of the Year.

After 12 years of coaching at Arizona, Potter will retire at the end of the season.

On the women's side, Stanford's Megan Gardner placed first in the women's platform finals with a score of 393.55 as the Cardinal won the women's side. Gardner was honored as the 1996 Women's Diver of the Year, while Tom Scotty of UCLA was presented with the award for Women's Diving Coach of the Year.

Arizona's Andrea Glass finished second with 343.15 points, and Melanie Mabry came in at sixth, posting a score of 298.85.

The Wildcats will next compete in the NCAA Championships, March 8-9.
