Wildcats see postseason hopes dim with loses to California schools

For the second time this season, California and Stanford handed Arizona consecutive defeats by a combined 13-1 deficit, as the Wildcats found themselves overmatched by two of the nation's hottest teams.

Stanford improved its winning streak against Arizona to 34 matches with a 7-0 victory.

Junior Laresa Marino and freshman Perrine Pernin, playing in the No. 4 and No. 5 spots, both went three sets before falling in hard-fought singles matches.

The No. 1 Cardinal are unbeaten in 21 contests this season.

Friday, Arizona took the doubles point and an early lead against California when the doubles team of Marino and freshman Debbie Larocque upended Cal's 16th-ranked duo of Jieun Jacobs and Nicole Havlicek, 8-6.

However, the Wildcats were swept by the Golden Bears on the singles side and lost the match, 1-6.

It marked the first time this season that Arizona won the doubles point and failed to capture the match.

Arizona has equaled a season-long five-match losing skid and is currently on the bubble for next month's NCAA team championships.

Next weekend's season finale at rival Arizona State becomes even more important now for Arizona.

The Wildcats (6-13 overall, 1-11 Pac-10) dropped a 4-3 decision to the Sun Devils in February, and the challenge will only get more difficult this time around.

No. 14 ASU owns a 13-1 home record, including a 4-3 upset over the 9th-ranked Golden Bears this weekend.
