A member of the left-wing Centri Sociali movement confronts police prior to the clashes which occurred in Rome yesterday, when members of the Centri Sociali tried to overrule police orders not to confront members of the right-wing, neo-fascist "Forza Nuova" movement, who were staging a separate rally at the Verano cemetery.

By The Associated Press

ROME - Police fired tear gas yesterday to keep leftist protesters from reaching a group of neo-fascists commemorating fascist soldiers who died during World War II. Three people were detained.

Clashes also erupted in Milan on a day Italians marked as the 56th anniversary of liberation from fascist rule.

The most serious incident took place near the Verano cemetery in Rome, where witnesses said leftists tossed homemade bombs.

The neo-fascists were led by Guido Mussolini, a grandson of fascist dictator Benito Mussolini and candidate of a tiny right-wing party for mayor of Rome.

"We are here to commemorate the fascists who died," Guido Mussolini told reporters at the cemetery. "Everyone thinks that fascists aren't worth anything, but we are here to commemorate them."
