Various Artists - Groovin' on the Grass

By Maggie Burnett

Grade: A

Between the boy-band crooners, folk music hoe-downs and good old-fashioned rock n' roll, the University Activity Board's latest endeavor Groovin' on the Grass (William Guth and UAB) has something for everyone. The UAB-sponsored "Eat to the Beat" is a free concert series that takes place on the University of Arizona Mall at least once a week and exclusively features UA students. This compilation album includes artists such as Craw Daddy-O, the Killingtons and Ball in the House- all bands that have performed on the Mall in the last year's season.

Groovin' on the Grass is particularly worth buying simply because all of its songs are a premium selection of works from just a few of the many bands to have appeared on campus. Surprisingly, the recording quality of the album is on the level of albums released by major record labels. For those skeptical music fans out there, yes, the artists featured on the album are actually first-rate performers. In other words, contrary to the "I've-never-heard-of-this-band-before" fear many people often associate with buying a CD containing unfamiliar bands, the music on Groovin' on the Grass is diverse yet bearable, a combination which makes this album a suitable addition to any CD collection. Groovin' on the Grass is available in the Student Programs office in the Memorial Student Union
