Scottsdale man arrested in wife's killing

By The Associated Press

SCOTTDALE, Ariz. - A Scottsdale man was arrested on a charge of killing his wife after going to police to report her as a missing person, a police spokesman said Saturday.

David Lee Chappell, 27, made statements while talking to detectives that linked him to the death of Jessica Chappell, whose body was found Wednesday in a ravine about 10 miles outside of Wickenburg, said Sgt. Doug Dirren.

Dirren would not comment on a possible motive but did classify the killing as a case of domestic violence. It's the third killing to be linked to domestic violence in Scottsdale in the past month, he said.

Until the arrest, authorities had been unable to identify Jessica Chappell, who had two severe wounds to the back of her neck. The 25-year-old victim had no identification when she was found and poliec said evidence suggested the body was not killed where it was located.

Dirren said David Chappell went to the police department Friday to make his report when authorities made a connection between what he was saying and the body case.

Detectives interviewed Chappell and eventually arrested him based on what he told them, Dirren said.

Chappell was booked into jail on one count of first-degree murder and ordered held without bond.
