Does your advice tend to fall on deaf ears? Maybe you need to learn the art of

persuasion. The Human Resources Department can help you out of this jam with this afternoon's program on "The Art of Speaking to Persuade and Influence." The department claims that after several hours of this workshop you'll be able to sell the Brooklyn bridge to a poor chump with nothing better to do with his money. The workshop starts at 8:30 a.m. in Room 216 of the University Services Building. Call 621-7701 to register for this and other classes in the department.

There's been speculation about the relationship between race and physical

ability, but do you believe there's any basis to it? Jeff Stone, an assistant psychology professor, will examine this issue today in his lecture "Racial Stereotypes About Athletes," a seminar that will explore how stereotypes guide our perceptions of physical ability, and how these negative stereotypes can decrease an athlete's motivation and level of achievement. This seminar starts at 6:30 p.m. at Lodge on the Desert, 306 N. Alvernon Rd., and costs $15.

Nothing to do during your lunch break today? Stop by the Douglas Building Room 102 for several mini lectures. The lunchtime lectures series kicks off with "The Greening of the Curriculum: Are the Methods and Goals of Cuba's

Organic Agriculture Movement Taught in Schools?" followed by "Slave Prostitution in Salvador, Bahia During the Late 19th Century" and finally "Micaela Bastidas: Reina, rebelde y martir de la rebelion de Tupac Amaru." The speeches last for an hour total and start at noon.

So you're about to start your dissertation and you have no idea where to begin. Try beginning with a Graduate Writing Workshop on "Designing a Workable Plan for Your Thesis or Dissertation." Seems like a pretty good place, doesn't it? The one-hour workshop will help devise an agenda for your paper and organize when things will be accomplished. The program starts at 4 this afternoon in Room 413 of the Modern Languages Building. Call Donna Rabuck at 621-5849 if you've got any questions about this or other writing workshops.

Your coach always told you to be a good loser, but that's easier said than done.

You're in luck though, because Character Counts, a sports ethics organization, is on campus today, and they want to help you lose your tendency to be a sore loser. This all-day seminar will explore issues in good sportsmanship, ethics and character building. "Pursuing Victory With Honor" starts at 8:30 this morning, and runs until 4:30 p.m. in Centennial Hall. The seminar is free, but you need to call 1-800-711-2670 to reserve your spot.
