WNBA, what a joke!

By Chris Martin

Arizona Daily Wildcat

I 've had enough.

I am bitter and tired of the NBA and the corporate powers that shove the most God-awful basketball ever played down my throat.

The WNBA is horrendous, consisting of a bunch of women struggling to make layups and play defense.

How many times do I have to hear about Cynthia Cooper, Sheryl Swoopes and Chamique Holdsclaw being superstar players?

Have you seen any of them drive the lane jump over a player and dunk the ball with authority? Or what about coming off a pick and burying a three-pointer in the blink of an eye?

Well, have you seen this? I haven't either, and herein lies the problem with the WNBA.

The play and competition is far inferior to the NBA, and the large talent disparity between the WNBA and NBA make the league games painful to watch.

And what about the Houston Comets?

They won the fourth-straight WNBA title this weekend, making them a WNBA dynasty. Too bad the league has only been around four years.

Is this team a women's version of the Michael Jordan-led Bulls teams of the 1990s?

I give you an emphatic "hell no."

Give me a high school team and a week of practice, and I could capture a WNBA title.

A team with three good players - Tina Thompson, Cooper and Swoopes - has dominated this league since the inaugural tip-off, making the WNBA playoffs not only boring but also anti-climactic.

The league lacks parity as the teams with more than one quality player contend for the title but ultimately come up short against Houston.

Now, many people will read this and think that I am the most sexist male on this campus. Nothing could be further from the truth.

I have no problem with the Arizona women's basketball team - they are competitive and play hard and, though they might be perennial underdogs, they at least still have a chance to take the Pac-10 title every season.

I also love women's soccer, the WTA, swimming, track and field and (of course!) Anna Kournikova.

At least soccer, tennis, track and field and swimming closely resemble their male counterparts and the matches or games are competitive and played at a high level.

I don't expect Venus Williams to have the strength and agility of Andre Agassi or Dara Torres to swim as fast as Gary Hall Jr., but, at least in sports such as swimming and tennis, the female athletes are able to perform similar feats under high-pressure situations.

I just can't appreciate basketball played below the rim with players who are over-hyped by the media and society just so the sport can be politically correct.

So send the hate mail to sports@wildcat.arizona.edu if you want. I'm ready for it, but know that I am not alone in my sentiments about the WNBA.

I may not be politically correct, but at least I'm right.
